On May 23 in Amsterdam, the Calefax Rietkwintet together with the Radio Filharmonisch Orkest under the direction of Osmo Vänskä will perform the world premiere of Luca Francesconi’s Vertical Invader. With this new concerto Francesconi continues his exploration of language, immitating familiar sounds of from our daily life. The piece moves from noise to consonance, and from variable meters and rhythms to a regular pulse. It explores all ideas without taboo.

The composer explains that his music is a “quest for transparency and the elimination of the mass of redundancy that is present today both in contemporary music and in commercial music’. The ‘vertical invader’ to which the title refers is a metaphor for a connection that is true and profoundly desired - as opposed to the false relationships presented by mass media - a synchronicity that in music is as perennially elusive as it is in the world’.

The concert will take place in the Het Concertgebouw as part of the NTR ZaterdagMatinee. The piece has been commissioned jointly by the Stichting Omroep Muziek/NTR ZaterdagMatinee and the Royal Concertgebouw.
