Ricordi just released a new book that contains correspondence between the Portuguese writer José Saramago, Nobel Prize laureate in literature, and the Italian composer Azio Corghi, one of the most versatile artists on the contemporary musical scene, spanning twenty years (1984-2004). The book called Lo sguardo obliquo. Il teatro musicale di Corghi e Saramago. Epistolario e testi letterari delle opere is published in Italian.
In addition to illustrating the deep ties of friendship and appreciation of each other’s intellect, this collection of letters also lets us penetrate the private “workshops” of the two artists and, especially, shows just how important a role Saramago’s literary discovery played in Corghi’s development of musical dramaturgy.
The volume ends with the libretto that the poet and the composer conceived together, forming the basis for the musical works which are baced on this voyage of ideas: Blimunda, Divara, La morte di Lazzaro, …sotto l’ombra che il bambino solleva, Cruci-verba, De paz e de guerra and Il dissoluto assolto.
