Vacchi’s Dai calanchi di Sabbiuno in memory of Patrice Chéreau

The Festival d’Aix-en-Provence pays homage to film and stage director Patrice Chéreau, who died last October, with a concert by the Orchestre de Paris under the direction of Paavo Järvi to take place on July 5 at the Grand Théâtre de Provence.

The program includes a performance of Fabio Vacchi’s Dai calanchi di Sabbiuno in its transcription for large orchestra. The original version, for 5 instruments, was composed in 1995 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Italian Resistance. This transcription was realized in response to a request by Claudio Abbado for the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester in 1997. Vacchi collaborated with Chéreau to write the music for the film Gabrielle (2005). The music was awarded the Prize for Best Soundtrack by the Italian Cinematography Foundation (Ente dello Spettacolo).
