From March 9 to 16 Silvia Colasanti’s La Metamorfosi returns to the stage at the Teatro Goldoni in Florence (Photos: Luca Moggi). The work, an opera “on solitude” in three parts, was commissioned by the festival Maggio Musicale Fiorentino in 2012. The famous short story by Franz Kafka is the basis of Pier’Alli’s libretto.

The composer wanted “to bring to the stage this story of Kafka where many of the themes that would go on to form the basis of universal themes in literature emerged: in the first place solitude, but also identity, the acceptance or refusal of one’s own destiny, family conflict, the breakdown in interpersonal ties, man’s relationship with power, and finally his relationship with beauty.”

The Orchestra and Choir of Maggio Musicale will be conducted by Marco Angius, with Lorenzo Fratini as choir master. Stage direction, scenery, costumes, video concept and lighting are by Pier’Alli (in collaboration with Luciano Roticiani for the lighting). The performers are Edoardo Lomazzi (Gregor Samsa), Laura Catrani (the sister), Gabriella Sborgi (the mother), Tiziana Tramonti (the governess), and Roberto Abbondanza (the father).
