Sciarrino's The Killing Flower in the UK

The Killing Flower is the title of the English version of Luci mie traditrici, which Music Theatre Wales will premiere on July 16 at the Opera House in Buxton, with the London Sinfonietta conducted by Michael Rafferty and stage direction by Michael McCarthy. The translation of the libretto (written by the composer himself) is by Paola Loreto (in collaboration with Kit Hesketh Harvey).

Gesualdo da Venosa, the visionary Renaissance madrigalist, condemned himself with the double murder of his wife and her lover when he caught them in flagrante delicto. Salvatore Sciarrino's Luci mie traditrici tells the story of this murder, a true story which seems especially suited for theatrical presentation. Since its first performance in 1998 at the Schwetzinger Festspiele, it has been presented more than 30 times in Europe, the United States and Japan.

Following the world premiere of the English version in July in Buxton, The Killing Flower will go on tour in the autumn around the UK: Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff (Oct 18); Linbury Studio Theatre at the Royal Opera (Oct 24); Venue Cymru, Llandudno (Nov 2); and Grand Theatre, Swansea (Nov 26).
