Boccadoro’s Snakes: Between Improvisation and Virtuosity

The ensemble Sentieri selvaggi will join Tim Berne and his group Snakeoil as guests at a concert on March 8 at the Teatro Manzoni in Milan where the two groups will perform the world premiere of Carlo Boccadoro’s Snakes for jazz quartet and instrumental ensemble. With this piece, Boccadoro continues to explore the interaction between composition and improvisation that he began in his earlier work Point of View for jazz quartet and large orchestra.

In contrast to Point of View, which makes use of bebop, Snakes exploits Tim Berne’s avant-garde, experimental approach to improvisation which leads to harsher, rough-edged jazz. In further contrast, by using a chamber ensemble – Sentieri selvaggi - Boccadoro notes that the composed portion of the music contains more soloistic virtuosity than his previous efforts that made use of a symphonic orchestra.
