Playing the piano keeps other musicians at arm’s length – not because of the sound of course, but due to the sheer size of the instrument. We’ve put together some recommendations off the beaten track, from Bernhard Lang to Lisa Streich, Pascal Dusapin and Luca Francesconi, as well as all-time masterpieces by Sergej Prokofiev, Oliver Messiaen, Arthur Honegger, and Manuel de Falla. 

We’re all anxiously waiting for life to return to concert halls, but it might be some time before we hear the big symphonies once again. In the meantime, the colorful possibilities of smaller outfits such as chamber and string orchestras are there to be experienced. We dug deep into our catalogues to discover beautiful works, hidden gems, and exciting soundscapes from the 20th and 21st centuries. 

In our Red Book, we selected more than 600 works and grouped them under 23 topics which represent a wide range of fundamental human experiences and emotions. “Longing and desire” are two of these emotions that many of us encounter in an unfamiliar way during these unprecedented times.
